The Color of Hair

HfG Offenbach

The project explores the disruptive use of human hair as a resource for creating sustainable materials. Through a biodesign approach, the designers transform this natural material into a valuable resource for the production of pigments and sustainable surfaces.

The Color of Hair” explores the potential of human hair as a sustainable resource for the production of natural pigments. Every year, vast amounts of hair are discarded by beauty salons and considered worthless waste, despite their rich composition of keratin and natural pigments. This project challenges that perspective, transforming hair into a key element for an innovative and eco-friendly coloring system.

The project fits within the context of biodesign, demonstrating how organic materials can be repurposed in innovative ways. Using hair as a pigment source opens up new possibilities in the fashion and textile design industries, offering a solution that merges aesthetics and sustainability.

Beyond its ecological value, The Color of Hair sparks a cultural and ethical debate on the significance attributed to human-derived materials. Hair, often associated with identity and beauty, is reinterpreted as a valuable resource rather than mere waste. Through an experimental and interdisciplinary approach, the project highlights the potential of design in redefining the life cycle of materials.
