Datarase

École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs

An interactive installation that makes visible and highlights the destruction of digital data at the moment and place of its production. The artwork invites reflection on the need for digital degrowth and the importance of forgetting in the age of hyperconnection.

“Datarase” is an art installation designed to implement and highlight the destruction of digital data at the moment and place of its production. Inside a large dark room, the walls are covered with projections of “bricks,” each representing a batch of information grouped under a unique identifier. These indexed bricks appear from above and descend, accumulating until they form lines that then disappear. This representation of disappearance is no less real: it marks the actual deletion of such data.

The artwork was first presented during the event “Nous ne sommes pas le nombre que nous croyons être,” organized by the Fondation Daniel et Nina Carasso in collaboration with the Chaire arts et sciences and the “Faits d’hiver” dance festival by micadanses, in Paris in February 2018. Through this immersive experience, the work raises questions about our relationship with the production and storage of data in the digital age, offering a critical reflection on the importance of forgetting in a world increasingly focused on the memorization and indiscriminate accumulation of information.
